The radioprotective action of the AET [S-2-aminoethylisothiouroniumbromide hydrobromide] was tested in terms of its ability to alter the frequency of the chromosomal aberrations in bone marrow cells of the Chinese hamster after the total exposure to 300 or 1050 R. The application of this substance resulted in a statistically significant decrease in the frequency of the chromosomal aberrations after exposure to 300 R. The higher radiation dose (exposure to 1050 R) was chosen since it corresponded to the mean value of the LD50/30 in the Chinese hamster. No statistically significant differences between the frequencies of the calculated breaks and cells carrying breaks for AET-protected and non-protected animals were revealed. In terms of the frequency of the chromosomal changes, no protective effect was demonstrated for the AET after the exposure to 1050 R.
