Published data on the problem of alimentary toxic aleukia are discussed. This disease is caused by utilization of corn products infected with F. sporotrichiella. A similar syndrome develops after administration to animals of sporofusarine (crystalline preparation of a highly toxic metabolite from F. sporotrichiella). Effect of sporofusarin on the stability of cell membranes was studied. Various degrees of resistance to the toxin were found in several types of subcellular structures; the distinctly high sensitivity of lysosomal membranes to the effect of sporofusarine was established. The effect of lysosome impairment was subsequently studied in experiments with isolated cell organelles in vitro, in isolated organs and in poisoned animals. The impairment of lysosomes caused by mycotoxin was more distinct in hemopoietic tissues which was confirmed by pathological developments after poisoning. This suggests that the selective damage of lysosomes by sporofusarine is directly related to the specific action of the mycotoxin. The possible role of lysosomes in pathogenesis of intoxications caused by mycotoxin from F. sporotrichiella is discussed. [Studies were conducted with mammals, birds and rats.].
