The question of candidiasis in burns

A 10-yr-old boy with extensive (65%) 3rd and 2nd degree burns developed a septic temp. following operation and partial donor skin grafts. Various antibiotics were given. Yeasts were found in the urine and in the blood, and Candida tropicalis was isolated from the mouth. Antibiotic therapy was stopped. Treatment with amphotericin B was excluded because of further possible damage to kidney and liver; clotrimazole, miconazole and 5-fluorocytosine were unavailable. A 0.5% gentian violet sol. was administered intravenously. The infusion was tolerated well. Blood and urine were sterile and temp. was reduced. Septic temp. reoccurred after 13 days and a second infusion was given. The patient died.
