The author notes that a small number of women who presented at general practice with typical symptoms of vaginal Candida infections were without a discharge or signs of candidal infection on speculum examination or vaginal swab cultures. Symptoms often resolved in 5-10 d and topical vaginal antifungal treatment did not seem to hasten recovery. The possibility of this phenomenon being caused by a hypersensitivity response to commensal levels of vaginal Candida organisms or being due to an allergic food reaction is discussed.
