Hydrolysis of retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate was studied in rat blood, liver, intestine, testes, placenta and embyronic liver. Activity of retinyl palmitate hydrolase was found only in the walls of the small intestine and in trace amounts in the liver of some rats. Retinyl palmitate was very slowly hydrolysed in the liver, depending on the metabolic demands of the organism as a whole.
