This organism was responsible for a new form of mastitis which appeared on Als Island in Spring 1984. Large numbers of M. bovis were found in the milk of 13 of 20 cows with mastitis, in 5 herds. After the outbreak had subsided, M. bovis was still present in 10 of 227 samples of bulked milk. This indicated the presence of symptomless shedders in at least 3 herds, from which clinically affected cows had been removed. Since 1981 M. bovis had also been recovered from 9 (1.3%) of 676 pneumonic calf lungs.
