The cytotoxic effect of DDVP on the in vitro cultured fibroblast cells of human embryo was studied. DDVP applied in the respective doses of 50, 25 and 12.5 .mu.g/ml of culture fluid 199 resulted in the inhibition of glucose and .alpha.-amino N assimilation by the fibroblast cells, both substrates being measured by the decrease of their amount in the medium. While the respective doses of 50 and 25 .mu.g/ml of medium result in inhibition of amino acid assimilation throughout the experiment, the dose of 12.5 .mu.g/ml results in a 7-day period of inhibition followed by stimulation of the amino acid assimilation by the cells. The lowest dose, i.e., 6.25 .mu.g DDVP/ml medium, does not affect the fibroblast cells as compared to the controls, but produces slight stimulation of glucose and .alpha.-amino N assimilation.
