There is evidence in favor of a preceding group A hemolytic streptococcal infection initiating the chain of events in rheumatic fever. But more information is needed to explain the phenomena following the initial infection and eventuating in the clinical entity: rheumatic fever. Although much information has been accumulated in the attempt to call rheumatic fever a "post streptococcal hypersensitivity," it is also obvious that an absolute answer is still impossible. There is much more to be proved before the complexities involved in the etiology of rheumatic fever are understood.
