Serological evidence for rheumatic fever & rheumatic heart disease in Kashmir (India)

A total of 35,107 children and young adults were examined over a period of 1 yr (1983-1984) of the Sheri-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, India, and 462 patients were clinically suspected of having acute rheumatic fever (RF)/rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Among these patients, 240 had strong serological evidence of recent or past streptococcal infection, 200 of these serologically positive patients were below 20 yr of age and showed a prevalance of RF/RHD in 5.7/1000. In the age group > 20 yr but < 35 yr a prevalence rate of 1.1/1000 was found.
