Spraying a 0.5% aqueous solution of double superphosphate to apple-tree leaves in the spring of 1974 resulted in an epizootic of nuclear polyhedrosis in a natural population of Aporia crataegi caterpillars caused by an activation of the latent viral infection. The frequency of nuclear polyhedrosis was 61.4 .+-. 1.6% in the 1st experiment (spraying on May 16) and 92.3 .+-. 0.3% in the 2nd (treatment on May 31) as compared to 13.2 .+-. 3% and 30.2 .+-. 1.6% in the respective controls.
