Heating of L. dispar 3rd and 4th instar larvae (Kiev [USSR] population) up to 45.degree. C for 60-120 min as well as a 30-day prolongation of egg (Azerbaijan [USSR] population) hibernation led to an induction of nuclear polyhedrosis [NPV] and to detection of virus carriers in most individuals of these natural populations. Carriers of latent NPV are widely distributed in some populations of gypsy moth larvae. Research is recommended to find effective low-toxic chemical inducers causing an activation of latent NPV in most individuals of gypsy moth natural populations for this polyphagous plant pest control.
