Circulating immune complexes were isolated by polyethylene glycol, dissociated with glycine buffer (pH 2.6) and tested for the presence of HBsAg by micro-ELISA. Isolation of such immune complexes was found to be more frequent in patients with glomerulonephritis (64%) and in HBsAg carriers (22%) as compared with patients of acute viral hepatitis (6%) and acute liver failure (10%) due to fulminant hepatitis. These complexes were not present in any of the patients with hepatic cirrhosis or subacute hepatic failure. The dissociated immune complexes on polyacrylamide gel with SDS, demonstrated two bands of HBsAg.
