Susceptibility of hawkmoths and their cell cultures to the polyhedrosis virus from an uncharacteristic host

The possibility of obtaining Galleria mellonella L. nuclear polyhedrosis virus multiplication in cell cultures and intact individuals of the unusual hosts.sbd.Deilephila euphorbiae L. and Sphinx pinastri L..sbd.was studied. Development of the viral process in cell cultures at 27.degree. C did not exceed 3 days. A longer course of the viral infection (up to 10 days and more) was observed in intact individuals of these species and was explained by maintenance of the infected insects at the room temperature not exceeding 18.degree. C. When the virus multiplies both in the cell cultures and in the intact insects of the unusual host, it retains its virulence for the initial host.
