Porcine coronaviruses: co-infection of cell cultures with transmissible gastroenteritis virus and hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus

Co-infection of cell cultures with transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and haemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (HEV) resulted in interference in the replication of both viruses. Interference occurred when cultures were exposed simultaneously and when one virus was added several hours after the other. The greatest interference was observed in the replication of TGEV when it was added to cultures already infected with HEV. Examination of co-infected cultures by haemadsorption and by immunofluorescence microscopy, using fluorescent antibodies specific for each virus, indicated that normal TGEV and HEV replications were usually mutually exclusive at the cellular level.
