Thrombocyte aggregation in depression of the function of the anticoagulation system of blood, caused by atherogenic diet

The correlation between thrombocyte aggregation and the functional state of the anti-coagulation system was studied during depression of the system and development of the prethrombosis state by long maintenance on an atherogenic diet. Blood of the jugular veins of rats maintained for 6 mo. on an atherogenic diet showed depression of the anti-coagulation function and increased concentrations of fibrinogen, high plasma tolerance to heparin, low total fibrinolytic activity and lowered non-enzymatic fibrinolysis of plasma. Three months after change to a normal diet, the anti-coagulation system was restored and the aggregation of thrombocytes returned to normal. The increased aggregation of thrombocytes in conjunction with several known indicators of prethrombosis may serve as a diagnostic test for atherogenic prethrombosis.
