In Egypt, urine and stool examinations for ova, the intradermal test and the circumoval precipitin test (COPT) were used to determine the prevalence of schistosomiasis among 446 inhabitants (hospital out-patients and schoolchildren) in Siwa Oasis, 135 out-patients at Luxor Hospital (Qena) and 300 out-patients of Aswan General Hospital. No infections were detected at Siwa (24 patients who gave positive reactions in the intradermal test were probably exposed to the infection outside the area). At Luxor 14% had positive urine, 25.9% were positive by the intradermal test and 24.4% by COPT. At Aswan the corresponding figures were 15.6, 30.6 and 46.0%.
