Toxocariasis in the humans and dogs of Siwa Oasis, Qena and Aswan Governorates, A.R.E

In Egypt, the intradermal test using Toxocara antigen was positive in 145 (32.6%) of 446 people (hospital out-patients and schoolchildren) at Siwa Oasis, in 88 (65.1%) of 135 out-patients at Luxor (Qena Governate) and in 210 (70.1%) of 300 out-patients at Aswan. However, by the precipitin absorption test (after prior precipitation with Ascaris antigen) the numbers of positive reactors were 2.2, 3.7 and 2.9%, respectively. The differences between the 2 tests are due to cross reactions between Ascaris and Toxocara antigens. Of 100 stray dogs from each of the 3 localities, 68, 83 and 79, respectively, had Toxocara eggs in their faeces.
