Incidence of schistosomiasis in surgical biopsies: a review of 284 cases

A series of 284 surgical biopsies with evidence of schistosomiasis from a total of 13 000 were collected from the Parirenyatwa and Harare hospitals, Zimbabwe, over a 12-month period. Tissues are categorised according to the tissue of origin and the clinical presentation is recorded. Many of the cases presented mimicked cancer and 10.5% were found to have carcinoma concomitant with schistosomiasis. The possible associations of schistosomiasis and cancer are discussed.
