The inconstant behaviour of a calf testis tissue culture system led to the discovery of contamination of a batch of membrane filtered foetal calf serum with bovine virus diarrhoea/mucosal disease virus. This re-emphasizes the dangers inherent in the use of untreated foetal calf serum for tissue culture production.
