Different inbred rat strains that are congenic with respect to the major histocompatibility complex (H-1) show low, intermediate or high immune responsiveness to the synthetic polypeptide (H,G)-A-L. Two out of 4 low-responder H-1 haplotypes, when crossed with intermediate-responding strains, were found to complement intermediate responsiveness to high responsiveness. The resulting antibody response was overdominant with respect to that of the intermediate responding parental strain. Interallelic and intergenic complementation models are proposed, and implications for the H-linked Ir gene control of immune responsiveness are discussed.
