Pigs involved in eight outbreaks of respiratory disease and from 11 clinically normal herds were examined. The respiratory disease syndromes in the herds investigated were probably the result of complex interactions between many factors rather than a specific infection. While a number of specific infections may be involved, they may be present alone or in combination in herds without obvious respiratory disease problems. Progressive respiratory diseases are dynamic processes, the initial causes of which may or may not be detectable when diagnostic examinations are carried out on single or small numbers of infected animals.
