Comparative toxicity of chlororganic dienes of trichlorbutadiene derivatives in acute experiments

As a step toward establishing permissable levels of trichlorobutadiene and tetrachlorobutadiene in the living and working environments of humans, a test of their relative toxicity was conducted on mice, rats and rabbits with intoxication by inhalation, ingestion and application to the skin and mucous membranes. Clinical symptoms are given of resultant CNS impairment (inhalation and ingestion), necrosis and toxic action (skin application) and death (all methods). Drops of the substances in the conjunctival sacs of rabbits resulted in symptoms of conjunctivitis. Tetrachlorobutadiene proved to be more toxic, cumulative and dangerous than trichlorobutadiene and their respective safe levels were 0.2 mg/m3 and 1 mg/m3.
