An outbreak of Klebsiella mastitis in a closed herd of 80 sows from March-Dec. 1974 is described. No infectious source was determined. Most of the sows survived, but of 592 piglets born, 176 were born dead and 80 died during the 1st wk of life primarily because of agalactia in the sows and subsequent crushing of the piglets. The surviving piglets took 3-5 wk longer than normal to reach standard pork weight. Information on the economic effect, clinical course and diagnosis of the disease was presented.
