Observations on injuries to sows confined in part slatted stalls

Four herds with unusually high culling rates in pregnant sows confined to partly slatted stalls were investigated. Clinical observations revealed foot and leg injuries which led to partial or complete posterior paralysis. Examination of the stalls showed that the slats were damaged as a result of poor casting, incorrect handling and wear and tear. It was recommended that the faulty slats be replaced by 75 mm slats with pencil round edges and 20 mm gaps.
