Some entomological observations in a suspected plague outbreak area of District Shimla (Himachal Pradesh)

A survey of some of the ectoparasites, including ticks, mites, fleas and lice of cattle and rodents was conducted in Himachal Pradesh, India, in 1983 following an outbreak of disease possibly caused by plague bacilli. A list of the species collected and their hosts is given. The presence of the mite Gahrliepia ligula [Schoengastiella ligula] on Bandicota sp. is reported for the first time from this area, and an undescribed species of Ixodes was collected from cattle. Hoplopleura acanthopus was found for the first time in India, on Bandicota sp. There was no microbiological evidence to implicate the fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) or mites in the outbreak of disease.
