Studies were made in 2 villages (population 8955) in Andhra Pradesh, India, from June 1975 to April 1978. The microfilaria rate in the 2282 people examined was 12.8 to 16.7% during this period. The number of Culex quinquefasciatus caught (man-hour density) was lowest (6.6) in May and highest (21.8) in February. Maximum transmission occurred in July to September. The infection rate in mosquitoes ranged from 6.1 to 11.0% in different months and the infectivity rate from 0.1 to 2.6%. It was estimated that 32 infective mosquitoes would bite a man/year. A transmission intensity index was calculated as man-hour density of vector X vector infectivity rate X number of infective larvae/infective mosquito.
