In sera of slaughter cattle and calves experimentally infected with Cysticercus bovis, the effectiveness of the indirect hemagglutination test (IHA) was studied with 3 cysticercal diagnostic preparations containing whole extract of C. bovis (No. 1) or fractions of it recovered on Sephadex G-75 (No. 2) and G-200 (No. 3). The activity in the IHA test of diagnostic preparation No. 1 was associated to a considerable extent with the presence of nonspecific components in the whole extract. Diagnostic preparations Nos. 2 and 3 were less active but more specific, due to purification of the fractional antigens from some nonspecific components. The effectiveness of the IHA test depends greatly upon the intensity of the invasion, and in generalized cysticercosis titers in the test are much higher. In the blood of some normal animals antibody to a Cysticercus component was found which appeared to be normal antibody of cattle.
