The indirect haemagglutination test (IHA) was compared both qualitatively and quantitatively to the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) technique for the detection of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in human sera. Excellent correlation was found between the 2 methods, the coefficient of correlation being +0.956I. A statistical study based upon variation of titres on duplicate sera demonstrated excellent internal reproducibility for the IHA method. IHA is capable of detecting IgG and/or IgM antibodies to T. gondii, but cannot differentiate between the 2. In suspected congenital cases, where placental leakage of IgM might have occurred, the IFA technique is indicated as an adjunct tool. IHA is highly reproducible, has prolonged stability, and produces standardized results and it is recommended over IFA for mass screening.
