An IHA test with liquid and lyophilized samples which can be stored for long periods of time and consist of formalinized sheep erythrocytes treated with tannic acid and sensitized with an extract of fat-free Trichinella spiralis larvae was developed. Positive results in titers of 1:640 (diagnostic) or higher were observed in 78.3% of patients with trichinellosis with the duration of the invasion < 1 yr and in 43.7% of patients infected for 2 yr or more. False positive results of the test were observed in 1.1%, mainly in patients with opisthorchiosis and rheumatic polyarthritis. The effectiveness of the test did not decrease when serum was substituted by dried blood.
