Problems associated with measles virus [MV] include the lethal effect of MV infection on patients with congenital or acquired cellular immune deficiency, the effect of MV infection on other diseases (i.e., tuberculosis and chronic airway diseases, nephrosis, leukemia), the difficulty of prevention of slow MV infection, and the selection of the appropriate vaccine. The cellular immunity decrease due to MV infection is apparently caused by the production of host DNA synthesis inhibitory factor; the production of this factor is intense with wild strains and low with weakly virulent strains. Subacute sclerotic encephalitis caused by MV infection is the result of the slow MV infection of the brain.
