Of 786 patients with bacteriologically confirmed dysentery [Shigella sonnei, S. flexneri], 234 (29.77%) had a concurrent helminthic disease (ascaridosis, trichocephalosis, enterobiasis) which aggravated the rectoromanoscopic picture. Hemorrhagic changes and erosive and ulcerative lesions of the large intestine mucous membrane were more frequent; catarrhal changes were confluent, and in pure dysentery they showed focality. In mixed dysentery, catarrhal-hemorrhagic, catarrhal-ulcerative and catarrhal-erosive lesions of the rectal and sigmoid mucosa were more frequent. In these patients mucous membrane exudation and spastic phenomena in the intestinal tract were more marked; mucous membrane repair was slower.
