During a blind screeing for potential antischistosomal agents it was observed that diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) interferes with the egg-laying of Schistosoma mansoni in mice, hamsters and Cebus monkeys experimentally infected. In mice the activity was evident when DDS was administered in the diet at a concentration as low as 0.05%. The activity was transitory, disappearing soon after the drug was withdrawn. A parasitologic survey among lepers under specific treatment revealed a low index of infection by helminths. The treatment by DDS of lepers harboring S. mansoni infection and other intestinal helminths was ineffective.
