Samples from 1 or more quarters with (i) aseptic mastitis (14 samples diagnosed by increased cell count only) or (ii) subclinical mastitis (36 samples diagnosed by increased cell count and bacteriological findings) as well as samples from (iii) healthy quarters of the same cows obtained from a total of 50 cows of different breeds and on different farms were analysed for total protein, casein, albumin + globulin, lactose, ash, Ca, Cl, SNF, titratable acidity, pH, sp. gr. and refractive index. Mean values with ranges are tabulated and differences between the (i)-(iii) milks are discussed without statistical evaluation. A similar tabulation is presented for subclinical mastitis samples classified into those of streptococcal, staphylococcal and corynebacterial origin. Differences in lactose content, (i) 4.32, (ii) 4.09 and (iii) 4.86%, and refractometer number (i) 37.9, (ii) 37.0 and (iii) 39.5, are considered the most suitable for diagnosis of subclinical mastitis.
