Biliary ascariasis in childhood

Of 528 children admitted to hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1958 to 1971 with acute abdominal symptoms caused by Ascaris, 351 had intestinal obstruction, 148 had involvement of the bile-ducts and 25 had pancreatitis. Of the 148 with biliary lesions, 9 had complications. In 47 patients, worms could be demonstrated in the bowel on plain X-rays, and by barium meal in 21. Intravenous cholangiography was of great value; 103 worms could be demonstrated in a dilated bile-duct.
