Biliary ascariasis and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a report of two cases

Two cases of biliary ascariasis with coincident extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma are reported in women (aged 58 and 78 years) from Perak, Malaysia. It is postulated that narrowing of the bile duct may have prevented the migratory Ascaris lumbricoides from returning to the alimentary tract, and that resultant chronic cholangitis may have contributed to the development of cholangiocarcinoma.
