A survey of the ABO and Rhesus blood groups of pregnant women in Lagos with special reference to the observed and theoretical incidence of erythroblastosis foetalis

(1) The ABO blood groups of 3000 pregnant women living in Lagos are given. These were all tested with anti D. (2) The Rhesus genotypes of 300 of these women are reported and from these the theoretical incidence of rhesus incompatibility due to the various components of the Rhesus system is assessed. (3) Twelve case histories are given. Six are of women found to have a measurable titre of anti D during pregnancy and six of children with haemolytic disease of the newborn, three due to Rhesus antibody formed by the mother and three presumed due to ABO incompatibility. (4) Two instances of the development of anti C in patients receiving transfusions are reported. (5) The importance of haemolytic disease of the newborn as a hazard of neonatal life in Lagos is discussed with special relation to its possible incidence in children of D positive mothers. The advisability of testing all patients, donors and pregnant women for C and E is also discussed.
