Folic acid and vitamin B-12 were estimated microbiologically in blood serum of 295 healthy pregnant women and 188 pregnant women with anaemia of varying severity, all between 18 and 45 years old, in the Tadzhik SSR. Folic acid was deficient in 27% of the pregnant women and in 46% of those with anaemia. Incidence increased with progression of pregnancy. Mean folic acid in serum of healthy and anaemic pregnant women was 133 and 120 compared with 156 ng/ml in serum of non-pregnant healthy controls. Severity of deficiency increased with stage of pregnancy and severity of anaemia. Vitamin B-12 values were lower in pregnant women than in controls and tended to decrease with progression of pregnancy but no case of deficiency was found.
