The karyologic study of Trichinella spiralis strains, using compression and aceto-orceine as staining agent, showed the female karyotype to have 6 chromosomes, and the male, 5. In oogenesis 3-chromosome egg-cells (n=3) are formed; in spermatogenesis some of the spermatozoids have 3 chromosomes (n=3) while others have 2 (n=2). In diakinesis, the spermatozoids penetrate the egg-cell at the first oocyte stage, the meiotic division then continues. Trichinella karyotypes are most conveniently studied at the metaphase stage of meiosis.
