Two groups of 3 healthy male subjects received a uniform water load of 750 ml. in a 2 hour interval at the start of each of 4 consecutive 6 hour periods. This load was administered as 5 per cent glucose in one group and as 10 per cent invert sugar in the other. Water balance, rate of excretion of urine, electrolyte composition, and electrolyte excretion rates were determined. No marked differences between the two solutions were noted in either the rates of excretion or the total excretion of water and electrolyte. However, there appeared to be a delay in the conservation of water and electrolytes in those subjects receiving 10 per cent invert sugar; this resulted in a somewhat greater loss of sodium and chloride. Phosphate and nitrogen excretion was increased in the invert sugar group. Both solutions were well tolerated. These studies are presented as additional evidence that a 10 per cent solution of invert sugar is a safe means of increasing caloric intake.
