Low doses of S. alternans [S. atra] toxin in the form of infected grain, liquid growth medium or partly purified toxin preparation were given to pregnant mice. The results of the number of non-pregnant mice, number of live foetuses and the number of affected foetuses compared with controls showed that the toxin can have detrimental effects on foetuses and yet cause no definite clinical signs of illness in pregnant mice. Uteroplacental haemorrhages were seen in treated mice.
