It is suggested that measurement of metabolizable protein (MP) metabolizable amino acids (MAA) requirements of ruminants and MP, MAA and urea fermentation potential (UFP) of feedstuffs be used to evaluate the protein quality of ruminants diets. Using the method it was predicted that a diet containing 28.5% whole-plant maize silage, 21.1% ground ear maize, 2.25% sugar cane molasses and 0.93% urea fed to lactating cows would supply sufficient protein for milk production of less than or equal to 20 kg milk but at higher lactation levels histidine, lysine and S-containing amino acids would become limiting.
