The toxicity of cow's milt to infant rabbits

2 peaks of mortality (at 7-10 days and 15-20 days of age) were observed in rabbit pups hand-reared on evaporated milk, reconstituted dried milk, or fresh cows' milk fortified with casein and vitamins and UHT-sterilized. Pancreatic protease in these pups fell markedly soon after birth, but by 10-12 days had regained the level in nursed pups [see DSA 36, 1086]. Young adult guinea-pigs sensitized to undigested or digested (trypsin + alpha -chymotrypsin) diet exhibited reactions to the digested milk diet which were at least as strong as to the undigested diet.
