Study of the radioprotective properties of prodigiosin in roentgen and neutron irradiation

The radioprotective properties of prodigiozan were studied after roentgen and neutron irradiation on 1500 inbred albino mice. The animals were irradiated with RUM-II in doses of 600-700 R and in the field of .gamma.-neutrons of the vertical biochannel of reactor VVR-M in doses of 232 and 261 rad. The animal survival, weight and morphological analysis of the changes in the spleen and thymus were used as the tests for determination of the radioprotective properties of prodigiozan. Prophylactic administration of prodigiozan 24 h before the irradiation had a pronounced protective effect when the irradiation dose was LD90/30. After the roentgen and neutron irradiation, the animal death rate decreased 45 and 22%, respectively. The protective effect of prodigiozan after roentgen irradiation was observed during both the intestine and the bone marrow syndromes while after the neutron irradiation, it occurred during the intestine syndrome. Prodigiozan had a stimulating effect on the reparative processes in blood forming tissue.
