Systemic chromomycosis in Rana pipiens

Papular or ulcerative skin lesions, with destruction of underlying soft tissue and bone, developed in most of 25 R. pipiens housed in a water tank. Death invariably followed depression and anorexia, although at first affected animals were active and alert. Necropsy lesions were mycotic granulomas and necrosis in the skin, liver, kidneys, lungs and other viscera. A fungus like Cladosporium or Fonsecaea [Phialophora] was isolated from walls and floor but not water of the tank. Lesions similar to those occurring naturally resulted when the frogs were experimentally infected with the fungus.
