Egg infertility is a serious problem to Hungarian goose farmers. Mechanical damage to the penis, though common, affects only a few ganders, but a disease which causes lesions on the penis in 70-80% of the birds has now appeared in many large flocks and is associated with low fertility. The condition seems to be caused by an organism which is not, but is similar to, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The disease is severe and about 10% of affected ganders die within a few weeks.
