Incidence of female gonorrhoea in relationship with inflammatory gynaecological diseases - verification from cultures

Gonorrhea was detected in 7.3% of 423 patients with gynecological inflammations. Positive findings were recorded from 8.5% of 248 patients with adnexitis and 6.9% of 130 patients with leukorrhea. Gonorrhea incidence among 31 patients with condyloma acuminatum was as low as 3.2%. These findings differed drastically from data obtained by microscopic diagnosis by which hardly any positive detection of gonococci was recorded from gynecological out-patients over the years. The present considerable rise in positive findings probably resulted only from the use of a modified transport medium (Stuart) which proved to be highly applicable to gynecological practice. The new approach showed the presence of gonorrhea in 1 of 14 patients with inflammatory gynecological processes. Because of the present epidemiological situation, verification of gonococci from cultures should be made an integral component of gynecological routine checks.
