B. Hocking considers that K. S. Warren, in his article on the relevance of schistosomiasis to medicine [New England J. Med. (1980) 303 (4) 203-206], considerably understates the ethical issues involved when Western research institutes begin contributing to research on diseases such as schistosomiasis, and believes that these issues should be discussed in a broader context than that of his article. In his reply, Warren discusses the philosophical issues raised by Hocking, in particular the relative appropriateness of immunology and vector control research.
