Available studies bearing considering the relationship of the mode of infant feeding and infectious illness, and infant mortality, in less developed countries are reviewed and discussed. The review addresses the questions of whether the mode of infant feeding is associated with differences in mortality and infections or in infection rates for specific pathogens. An attempt also is made to assess the possibility of a direct causal link between infant feeding mode and illness. (wz)
