A detailed review focuses on breastfeeding trends in low-income countries, based on national-level studies of infant feeding practices. Data sources, conclusions, and limitations for the most important of these studies are examined. Trends in breastfeeding at the national level and for selected sub-groups are described for those countries with adequate data, and cross-sectional differences in breastfeeding practices are compared for a number of countries. Finally, available information on supplementation patterns in the developing world are examined. A detailed discussion of methodological issues and a recommended methodological approach for assessing breastfeeding trends in the developing world are appended. (wz)
