The effects of mild to moderate zinc deficiency on immune function and the risk of infectious diseases in children in developing countries are discussed in this review. Topics include gestational zinc deficiency and immune function after birth; zinc deficiency and immune function; effects of zinc supplementation on therapy of diarrhoea; effects of zinc supplementation on prevention of infectious diseases; and effects of zinc supplementation on child mortality.
